Another Telephone Fraud Alert

Another Telephone Fraud AlertWe have been advised that there are international PABX hackers targeting the UK and exploiting weak security measure's within some telephony equipment to make follow on calls. These calls are directed to national and international premium rate lines.

Sector supplier Entropie Voice and Data has identified that the favoured PABX to target is a Samsung DCS with integral voicemail. At present the advice being given to customers is to:

* Change Voicemail, System Administrator and Programmer passwords
from default settings immediately, and to change them on a daily basis going forward.
* Disable all outbound lines from the Voicemail platform.
* To disable live system programming from display keyset, DISA & DISA Security (Direct Inward System Access), remote programming, conferencing and similar facilities.

This is a similar racket to that reported in our mid-April edition where we highlighted that BT was under pressure on scams. Whether there is a direct link between the scammers and the organisations using premium rate phone lines remains to be proved. Either way, BT gets it in the neck, rightly so, as the facilitator.

Anyone with a Samsung system that requires technical support might wish to discuss the matter directly with Entropie on 08707 399999.
